Signs a Pet Is in Need and What You Can Do About It
How to recognize a stray or neglected pet in distress, and the safe, practical steps you can take to help.

Many animals in trouble suffer quietly. A dog wandering the same block for days or a thin cat sheltering under a porch may not look like an emergency, yet these animals often need help fast. Knowing what to look for, and what to do next, can save a life.
Warning signs to watch for
- Visible injuries: limping, open wounds, bleeding or a hanging limb.
- Body condition: ribs, hips or spine clearly visible, or a swollen belly.
- Coat and skin: heavy matting, bald patches, sores or constant scratching.
- Eyes and nose: discharge, cloudy or swollen eyes, sneezing or labored breathing.
- Behavior: extreme fear, hiding, lethargy, or an animal that will not move.
- Environment: a pet left outside in extreme heat or cold without shelter or water, or tied up with no one around.
What you can do
- Keep yourself safe first. Frightened or injured animals can bite or scratch. Approach slowly, speak softly and never corner them.
- Offer water and space. A bowl of water and a quiet spot can calm an animal while you get help.
- Check for identification. Look for a tag or collar, and ask a vet or shelter to scan for a microchip.
- Take photos and note the location. This helps rescuers and owners find the animal.
- Call for help. Contact local animal control, a nearby shelter or a rescue group. In an emergency, go to the nearest emergency vet.
- Report suspected cruelty. If you believe an animal is being neglected or abused, report it to local animal control or law enforcement.
