10 Things You Might Not Know About Animal Rescue

Animal rescue involves far more than finding homes. Ten facts that show how complex and rewarding the work really is.

Animal rescue is often pictured as a happy adoption day, and those days are wonderful. But a lot happens before an animal is ready to go home. Here are ten things many people do not know.

  1. Many pets are surrendered, not abandoned. Moves, housing rules and vet bills cause many families to give up pets they love.
  2. Foster homes are the backbone of rescue. Many rescues have no central shelter and depend entirely on volunteer foster families.
  3. Medical care is the biggest cost. Vaccines, spay and neuter surgery and treatment add up quickly.
  4. Black dogs and cats often wait longer. They can be overlooked in photos and kennels, even though their personalities are just as wonderful.
  5. Senior pets make excellent companions. They are often calm, house-trained and deeply grateful for a home.
  6. Microchips reunite families. A chip with up-to-date contact details is one of the best ways to bring a lost pet home.
  7. Transport is a big part of rescue. Volunteers often drive animals long distances to vets, fosters and adopters.
  8. Behavior takes time. A scared animal may need weeks or months to trust people again.
  9. Adoption fees rarely cover costs. Fees help, but the true cost of rescuing and treating a pet is usually much higher.
  10. Small acts add up. A share on social media, a bag of food or a few hours of volunteering all make a difference.
